Virtual Human Interaction Lab

VHIL

VHIL is a lab at Stanford that explores psychological and behavioral effects of Virtual Reality.

While working there, I recreated the lab room in the Unity Game Engine for use in VR experiences. This would allow users to interact with the room at a 1:1 scale. This scene became a hub for multiple VR experiences focused on the ability to expand perception using VR.

Process

This scene required taking detailed dimensions of the space. Once a prototype graybox scene was built and dimensions adjusted, the detail assets were modeled and materials created.

Floor carpet and wall pannel materials were designed procedurally using Substance Designer. Other maps such as the wood and metal imperfections were sourced from Texture Haven [1]. The process required constant back and forth between VR in Unity and Blender to test and adjust scale and lighting.

Parallax Lab Room Pit

For an experiment, the lab required the lab room floor to open up and reveal a pit and a plank to physically walk across during the VR experience.

Regularly spaced I-Beams project out into the pit to emphasize height as the users point of view shifts while moving along the plank.
